This item is an absolute MUST for openback banjos.
Keeps the back of the banjo away from your body, resulting in a very noticeable boost in tone and volume. So much of the sound of the banjo can be muffled by your belly! This contraption is especially helpful when standing or using a strap. It easily installs by slipping inside the back of the banjo and is slightly adjustable. It’s also slightly radiused outward to ensure the open back of your banjo stays open. Rubber and leather pads are in place to protect the instruments finish. Also fits inside most cases, so removal isn't necessary.
Models available to fit either an 11 inch or 12 inch open back banjo. (Measure across the total diameter of your banjo head to know which one you need.) Choose option below. Not recommended for instruments with varnish finish, unless you’re like me and don’t worry too much about those kinds of things.

Anybody on the fence about these just get it! My banjo is louder,more full sounding,and I can hear all the notes up the fretboard crystal clear!! I had the one for my mandolin and just took it off and bent it out alittle and it fit on my 11in pot perfectly!! It also puts my hand in a much better position for Clawhammer!! Highly recommend

It was only by accident that I found out about the Tone-Gard for openback. And I’m so thankful as I can’t believe how much better my Deering Sierra openback sounds now. It is especially noticeable when performing standing up!
I've got one each on my two open-backed banjos. I don't know about them enhancing tone, but they give me better volume and make it more comfortable to hold against my belly. I love well thought out and manufactured things, and this product is both of those things.
