Woah! This mandolin has about as much character as I’ve ever seen in an instrument! And the sound matches the look! Very woody, resonant, and responsive! Plays like butter!
This little gem has definitely been “well loved” as you can tell by the photos. But it still has a lot of love in it yet to give. Aside from a repaired top crack that runs from the treble F-hole to the side (a common crack in mandolins), there is also some finish wear (nothing structural) as can been seen in the pictures as well as a little bit of fret wear. But again, nothing major there either that needs any immediate attention. Lastly, several of the little screws that go through the tuner buttons have fallen out and become lost. This is probably an easy replacement from the manufacturer, and the mandolin still functions and tunes fine without them. The buttons are a very snug fit so they stay put just fine for the time being.
Now for the good points, the neck looks great, the arch of the top looks great, everything is aligned properly and solid…and even the frets, while they have a little wear, have never been dressed before have a lot of life left in them. Those little minor issues though are why this mandolin is priced quite a bit lower than other comparable used models so this is a great way for a budget minded buyer to get into a good deal on a world class Collings mandolin!
