Own a piece of history, a legendary 1940 Gibson F Style mandolin!

1940 Gibson F4 Mandolin

(Serial No. 96390, factory order number 565F) Gibson F style mandolins from this era are rare as hens teeth. By this time, mandolin popularity from that lasted through the early 20s had diminished, and the F4 was only built as a special order. That is what you have with this specific mandolin. It features a straight across pearl Gibson logo with a flower pot inlay (similar to Sam Bush’s old Gibson) and and unbound peghead.  Also has F7 style Nick Lucas inlays with a bound fingerboard, squared at the bottom without an extension. Has a sunburst top typical of this era, chocolate brown stained maple back and sides, and a checkerboard pattern rosette around the soundhole. The fingerboard is elevated off the top like that of the legendary F5. The condition is overall way better than you would expect for this age. The headstock scroll was repaired at some point (super common) and there are expected finish marks and minor dings from age, but overall it’s in really great shape structurally. It retains all of its original hardware except the missing pickguard. The tuners, bridge, tailpiece and cover are all correct. This is a really great sounding mandolin with a deep and woody bass response.
