Just like the standard Calhoun, but with a wider 1 3/16” nut width. This extra 1/16” gives the player a bit more room between the strings, and fees great in hand.
From the moment I laid eyes on one of these new Calhoun model flat-top mandolins by Northfield, I was impressed. They display all the quality one has come to expect from Northfield. Then I played one and was twice as impressed. They have such a rich, old timey tone. The bass tones are round and hollow and the trebles are sharp and breathy. These things play like butter and are really unique in that they are a throwback to a mandolin style that even pre-dates our beloved “bluegrass” models. What really impressed me most was the volume and power of these little jewels. Having played several older mandolins of this type over the years, I’ve always appreciated the unique tone but never found them to be quite as loud as what these Calhouns are. Old classical and early traditional tunes just sound like they were written with this instrument in mind. A great value worth every penny!
